This month marks the celebration of Employee Appreciation. Every year, from the first of March, companies around the world take time to celebrate their employees.
And while it’s great to set aside a day once a year to show our deep appreciation for the individuals who form the foundation of our company, we should be celebrating our employees every day!
Organizations often celebrate Employee Appreciation Day by offering gifts, organizing small events, or recognizing their employees’ various accomplishments. Here are a few tips to show your employees they are appreciated not only on Employee Appreciation Day, but also on every other day of the year.
The Importance of Happy Employees
We all strive to live a happy and fulfilling life. If we are lucky, we find a career or trade that not only supports our family and community but also makes us happy. Employee Appreciation Day is a gentle reminder of just how important our employees and team members are to our success.
Happiness is contagious! In fact, research conducted by Nicholas Christakis of Harvard University found happiness can spread through networks of colleagues, family, friends and neighbors. The study, which examined data from 5,000 people, over the course of 20 years, determined that when we surround ourselves with happy people, both in terms of social ties and physical proximity, we become happier too.
Whether at work or home, when we surround ourselves with happy and positive people, it will make us happier. For example, when a person who lives within a mile of a good friend becomes happier, the probability of this person’s friend or colleague becoming happier increases by 15%. When we take time to show our team members how important they are to us, it will create a trickle effect. Not only are happy employees more productive, but they are also more likely to remain committed to your company for the long haul.
